Serbia commemorates 112th anniversary of the Battle of Cer
A state ceremony was held in Tekeriš to commemorate the 112th anniversary of the Battle of Cer, one of the most significant battles of World War I. The event involved the laying of wreaths at the monument to the heroes of Cer to honor the Serbian soldiers who died during the conflict.
The ceremony was led by Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, the Minister for Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs. Attendees included representatives from the Government of Serbia, the Ministry of Defence, the Serbian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Mačva District, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and various civic associations.
During her address, Minister Đurđević Stamenkovski reflected on the historical significance of the period, specifically mentioning the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum delivered to Serbia on July 23, 1914. She noted that while Serbia attempted to respond peacefully by accepting most terms, it refused to allow foreign investigations on its territory without domestic jurisdiction. Following the expiration of the ultimatum, Austro-Hungary declared war on July 28, 1914. The Battle of Cer is highlighted as a major victory for the Serbian army and the first significant Allied victory of the war.
