Serbia commemorates Battle of Leget as disinformation targets Ukrainian women

In Serbia, commemorations are being held at the Leget field between Sremska Mitrovica and Šašinci to honor the fallen during the Battle of Leget. This World War I engagement, which occurred on September 6, 1914, saw the Timočka Division attempt to force a crossing of the Sava River. The battle resulted in a significant defeat for the Serbian army, with over 6,500 soldiers being driven from their positions following an enemy counterattack.

The tragedy has historically linked the regions of Srem and Timok, leading to traditions of remembrance and a formal brotherhood between the municipalities of Sremska Mitrovica and Negotina established in 1995. A monument at the site was originally erected in 1922 and officially unveiled in 1923.

Separately, reports indicate that pro-Russian Telegram channels are utilizing disinformation campaigns targeting Ukrainian women. These campaigns use stolen or old photographs of women, including members of the Ukrainian military, paired with false claims of sexual violence to act as clickbait. The goal of these deceptive posts is to lure users into specific Telegram channels and groups.
