Serbia faces accusations of democratic decline by German weekly Tagespost

The German weekly publication Tagespost has characterized Serbia as being on a path toward dictatorship, noting that President Aleksandar Vučić is attempting a risky maneuver through new elections to consolidate total power. The publication suggests such political maneuvers are comparable to those seen in Russia.

According to the report, Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) have systematically gained control over the media, economy, and judiciary since 2014. The commentary highlights concerns regarding non-transparent tenders, embezzlement of public funds, and alleged links between the ruling clan and organized crime. It also notes that large-scale anti-government protests in recent years were met with harsh crackdowns.

The European Union has indicated that Serbia is not making sufficient progress on its path toward membership. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has stated that Belgrade’s genuine commitment to EU integration will be assessed following the upcoming elections. The report further notes Serbia’s refusal to align with EU foreign and security policies, specifically regarding sanctions against Russia, as the government maintains traditional ties with Moscow.
