Serbia faces diplomatic challenges amid stalled EU reforms

The state of Serbian diplomacy is facing significant criticism as the country struggles to align with European Union standards. Despite an official strategic orientation toward the EU, indicators suggest Serbia is distancing itself from the Union rather than approaching it.

Key issues cited include a lack of essential reforms regarding the rule of law, judicial independence, and media freedom. Reports indicate that only six of the 34 planned steps in the Reform Agenda have been fulfilled over the last five years. Furthermore, the government is accused of maintaining anti-European rhetoric through tabloids while simultaneously seeking EU funds.

As European officials, including Commissioner Marta Kos, signal decreasing tolerance for democratic backsliding in the Western Balkans, the Serbian leadership has attempted to find alternative ideological allies in the West.
