Serbia facing rising social inequality and poverty, says Initiative A11

The advocacy group Initiative A11 has reported that more than one-third of Serbia's population struggles to make ends meet, living paycheck to paycheck. In a statement marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the group criticized the current state of social injustice and the deepening of social inequalities in the country.

According to data from the Republic Statistical Office for May 2026, the median net salary was 93,277 dinars, while official estimates suggest approximately 110,000 dinars are required to cover total monthly household expenses. The initiative noted that only 5.7% of households report no difficulty covering housing costs, suggesting that housing has become unaffordable for the average person.

Furthermore, the group stated that one-third of households cannot afford a short vacation or handle unexpected household expenses. Initiative A11 criticized the government's social policies as unsustainable and short-term, accusing decision-makers of using one-time payments and promises to secure political trust rather than implementing strategic poverty reduction measures.
