Serbia implements landfill remediation and solar energy projects

Local authorities in Serbia are undertaking significant landfill remediation projects to address long-standing environmental and communal issues.

In Pirot, the Prisjan landfill is scheduled for remediation next year. The project, estimated to cost approximately 100 million dinars, aims to manage between 50,000 and 60,000 cubic meters of waste. Additionally, a second phase of work is underway at an older landfill near the industrial zone, involving 550,000 tons of waste with 300 million dinars allocated for isolation and monitoring. A solar power plant with a capacity of roughly 2.5 megawatts is planned for the top of the remediated site to help fund local public lighting.

In Banatski Brestovac, the city of Pančevo has funded the complete cleaning and remediation of a village landfill. This effort aims to eliminate recurring fires and smoke that have plagued the area. The project involves covering approximately two hectares of the site with soil to isolate burning masses from the air and prevent future outbreaks, providing a safer environment for local residents.
