Serbia implements new parent-caregiver financial support law
Serbia has officially implemented the Law on Parent-Caregivers, allowing eligible parents to apply for a monthly financial compensation of 65,000 dinars starting October 1. The Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs stated that applications can be submitted electronically or in person at social work centers. The law aims to provide economic and social security for families caring for children or adults with special needs who require intensive, continuous care.
The monthly benefit will be adjusted to the nominal growth rate of average salaries starting March 1 of next year. The status also ensures rights regarding pension, disability, and health insurance. To assist families, a dedicated telephone information line will be established to provide guidance on documentation and procedures.
While the rollout has seen immediate interest—with dozens of electronic applications submitted shortly after midnight—some families have expressed concerns. Specifically, some parents fear that applying for the status might lead to reassessments that could potentially reduce the disability rating of their children, creating a dilemma between seeking financial aid and maintaining current disability levels.
