Serbia introduces parent-caregiver status and 65,000 dinar monthly allowance

Starting October 1, 2026, parents in Serbia can apply for official parent-caregiver status to receive a monthly allowance of 65,000 dinars. The new law aims to provide economic and social security for parents who cannot participate in the labor market due to the intensive, continuous care required by their children or dependents.

To qualify, applicants must be unemployed, live in the same household as the person they care for, and the dependent must already have status as a recipient of increased care and assistance. The state will cover taxes and contributions, ensuring caregivers maintain rights to pension, disability, and health insurance.

Applications can be submitted electronically or in person at competent social work centers. The Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs has stated that the procedure is designed to minimize administrative burdens, with a 15-day decision deadline once documentation is complete. A dedicated telephone helpline will also be established to assist families with the process.
