Serbia advances major energy and waste management infrastructure projects

Serbia is moving forward with several strategic infrastructure developments focused on energy security and environmental management. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has approved an environmental impact study for a 113-kilometer oil pipeline. Operated by Transnafta, the project will connect the Hungarian border near Horgoš to the Transnafta terminal in Novi Sad, with a projected capacity of 5.5 million tons of REB-type oil annually.

In the energy sector, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has been directed to prepare an environmental impact study for a critical power grid in western Serbia. This project aims to connect the future Bistrica pumped-storage hydroelectric plant to the grid, integrating Serbia into the pan-European energy highway. The Bistrica investment is valued at 1.2 billion euros.

Regarding waste management, a regional project for 180,000 citizens in northern Serbia has been initiated. The plan includes constructing a sanitary landfill at the Rančevo site and remediating 14 hectares of unsanitary landfills to serve the municipalities of Sombor, Apatin, Kula, Odžaci, and Bač. Additionally, Elektrodistribucija Srbije plans to build new facilities in Subotica for the temporary storage of hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste.
