Serbia may see leadership reshuffle as President Vučić eyes premiership

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has indicated he could resign before the end of his term and run for the post of prime minister. Moving from the presidency to the premiership would allow him to remain in power beyond the constitutional limit that bars a third presidential term.

If Vučić steps down, parliament speaker Ana Brnabić would become acting president, adding to her existing roles as prime minister and speaker. The proposal comes amid large‑scale student and civic protests triggered by a building collapse in Novi Sad, with demonstrators demanding accountability for alleged corruption and systemic failures. Analysts note that while the shift would change the formal structure of power, it may not substantially alter the dominance of Vučić and the Serbian Progressive Party.
