Serbia media operators face scrutiny over broadcasting legality and content

Major telecommunications and cable operators in Serbia, including United Group, Yettel, and Telekom Srbija, are facing criticism regarding the content they distribute. An open letter addressed to these companies alleges that Informer TV broadcasts content that systematically violates journalistic ethics, media laws, and the Serbian Constitution through the use of hate speech, insults, and the dehumanization of political opponents and civil society members.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the legality of certain media broadcasts. Reports indicate that several channels, including Informer TV, Kurir TV, and Blic TV, are accessible via standard terrestrial antennas in parts of southeastern Serbia despite lacking official national or regional frequencies. While technical services within the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) suggest such access may be legal through specific provider contracts, experts like Rodoljub Šabić argue this represents a significant loophole in the Law on Electronic Media.

Additionally, there are allegations that certain media content is being made available for free to citizens in rural areas where cable networks are less prevalent, potentially serving as a form of support for upcoming political campaigns.
