Serbia minimum wage negotiations enter final stage

Negotiations regarding the minimum wage in Serbia for the upcoming period are entering their final stages. The government has proposed an increase to approximately 600 euros, representing a 9.2 percent rise from the current level of roughly 550 euros (65,000 dinars).

Labor unions are advocating for a higher minimum of 650 euros, arguing that current proposals do not sufficiently account for the real cost of living. Conversely, the Union of Employers of Serbia has indicated that while more than half of its members can accept the government's 600-euro proposal, between 42 and 44 percent of employers claim they cannot sustain such an increase without additional relief, such as raising the non-taxable portion of earnings.

Employers have also raised concerns regarding wage compression, noting that significant increases in the minimum wage may force companies to raise salaries for all qualified workers to maintain pay gaps, or risk losing skilled staff to foreign markets. A meeting of the Social-Economic Council is scheduled for August 18 to attempt to reach a compromise.
