Serbia moves to enhance energy security via new pipeline and increased production

Serbia is working to strengthen its energy security through increased domestic production and new infrastructure projects. Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated that the supply of oil derivatives remains stable despite challenges such as low water levels on the Danube and international market volatility. The Pančevo refinery has increased its processing capacity to nearly 13,000 tons per day, and NIS is expected to further increase production in September.

To enhance long-term stability, the Serbian Parliament has approved guarantees for Transnafta Pančevo to fund the construction of a new oil pipeline to Hungary. The project, which is expected to begin by the end of the year, has a planned capacity of approximately 5.5 million tons of oil annually. Milun Babić, president of the Assembly of the Energy Association of Serbia, noted that while the pipeline is a significant step toward diversifying supply routes beyond the current JANAF pipeline, Serbia must continue to seek additional connections to avoid over-reliance on single sources.
