Serbia moves to rebuild Jasički and Širalija bridges amid rising traffic concerns

The city of Kruševac has released a detailed regulation plan for the reconstruction of the Jasički bridge over the Zapadna Morava. The plan responds to increased traffic volumes caused by the new Moravski corridor, proposing a two‑lane carriageway, a dedicated bicycle lane, pedestrian paths, upgraded lighting and structural reinforcements. The bridge, originally built in 1928 and repaired after damage in the 1999 NATO bombing, is considered a critical link for more than 30 settlements on the river’s left bank.

Separately, a semi‑trailer became stuck on the bridge over the Širalija stream on the Vranjicke Njive‑Rogami road, destroying much of its protective fence and halting traffic for several hours. Local residents demanded that heavy trucks be barred from the bridge and called for its reconstruction. Road authorities secured the bridge, installed temporary signage and vertical safety strips, and said fence repairs would begin within days. The incident highlighted ongoing safety concerns for several aging bridges in the region.
