Serbia opposition says government cannot call snap elections while no‑confidence motion pending

Biljana Đorđević, co‑speaker of the Green‑Left Front (ZLF), told the newspaper Nova that Serbia’s government cannot trigger early parliamentary elections while an opposition‑initiated motion of no‑confidence is still active. She explained that only Prime Minister Đuro Makuṭ could resign, causing the cabinet to fall; a 30‑day period would then allow a new government to form, after which elections could be scheduled. As long as the no‑confidence request remains pending, the election law bars calling elections.

Đorđević said the opposition parties – NPS, Party of Freedom and Justice, ZLF, Serbia Centre, People's Strength, Ecological Uprising, Movement for the Restoration of the Kingdom of Serbia, Movement of Free Citizens and the Democratic Action of Sandžak – submitted the motion in February over the “Generalštab” affair, but ruling‑party MPs have repeatedly blocked quorum. She expects them to vote against the motion to avoid the election trigger.
