West Nile virus cases reported in Serbia and Kosovo

West Nile virus cases are being reported across the Balkans and Europe. In Serbia, the Dr Milan Jovanović Batut Institute recorded 46 cases between June 1 and September 20, with 43 involving neuroinvasive forms. The majority of cases were concentrated in Belgrade.

In Kosovo, the National Institute of Public Health (IKSHPK) confirmed seven positive cases between August 7 and September 18, resulting in two deaths involving individuals aged 60 and 80. While one patient remains in serious condition, medical experts note that approximately 80% of infected individuals show no symptoms, and only a small percentage develop severe forms.

Across 14 European countries, including Italy, Greece, and Spain, a total of 1,437 locally acquired cases have been reported. Health authorities emphasize that the virus is transmitted via mosquito bites and recommend using repellents and protective clothing to mitigate risk.
