Ratko Mladić: IRMCT rejects humanitarian release request
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) has rejected a request for the early release of Ratko Mladić on humanitarian grounds. Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 for genocide and war crimes, is reported to be in the final stages of life. Medical reports indicate his condition is rapidly deteriorating, with death potentially occurring within weeks.
Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić has appealed to IRMCT President Graciela Gaut Santani, requesting that Mladić be transferred to the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade to spend his final days near his family. Serbia has expressed readiness to accept all necessary restrictions, including regular medical reporting and enhanced security measures.
However, President Gaut Santani concluded that the interests of justice and legal principles do not necessitate release solely due to an expected imminent death, noting that Mladić’s human dignity is being respected and that he has access to adequate medical care in The Hague. The decision has faced criticism from Mladić’s family, with his son, Darko Mladić, alleging that prison doctors have ceased treatment. Conversely, an association of mothers of Srebrenica massacre victims has denounced the calls for his release as 'provocations' and an 'enormous injustice'.
