Serbia revises vehicle registration fees as Croatia promotes leasing over ownership

Serbia has introduced new rules for vehicle technical inspections and registration fees. The technical inspection price for passenger cars now ranges from 3,000 to 6,000 dinars, with most stations charging about 5,000‑6,000 dinars. Registration costs also include mandatory insurance, a vehicle usage tax based on engine size and age, municipal fees, and administrative charges. Sample calculations show total registration expenses of 22,000‑25,000 dinars for small, older cars and up to 37,000‑40,000 dinars for average family vehicles, with higher amounts for large‑engine cars.

In Croatia, companies are increasingly abandoning the purchase of official vehicles in favor of long‑term leasing. Buying a new car can lose roughly a quarter of its value in the first year and about half after five years, while owners also bear registration, insurance, service, tyre, and administrative costs. Leasing arrangements, such as those offered by Optima Rent, bundle registration, insurance, maintenance, tyre changes and roadside assistance into a fixed monthly rate, providing predictable expenses, no large upfront outlay, and flexible fleet size.

Both developments reflect a shift toward cost predictability and reduced administrative burden for drivers and businesses in the region.
