Serbia reduces costs for essential prescription medications

Serbia has implemented new measures to reduce the cost of essential prescription medications. As part of a government aid package, two major groups of drugs are now significantly cheaper for citizens.

The first group includes 16 oral anticoagulants used to prevent blood clots and strokes. Previously costing between 1,700 and 6,000 dinars, these medications will now cost between 600 and 1,100 dinars, with the state covering 70 percent of the cost.

The second group consists of medications for heart failure and diabetes, such as SGLT2 inhibitors. These prices have been reduced by at least 50 percent. The state has allocated approximately 3.7 billion dinars (around 32 million euros) to support these subsidies.

Additional medications for skin and immunological diseases, as well as oncology treatments, are expected to be phased into the subsidized list through late September 2026.
