A study by Vignette Switzerland found that Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania have the highest road‑fatality rates in Europe, with 74, 71 and 68 deaths per million inhabitants respectively – each well above the EU average. Serbia topped the ranking for the second year in a row, although its latest figures are slightly lower than the previous year.

Nordic nations remain the safest, as Norway and Sweden both recorded only 19 road deaths per million people, roughly four times fewer than Serbia. The analysis also placed popular tourist destinations such as Portugal, Greece, Italy and France among the ten most dangerous European countries for drivers.

Long‑term safety improvements were noted in Lithuania (a 43 % drop in road deaths over ten years) and in Latvia, Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary, where fatalities fell between 30 % and 37 % during the same period. By contrast, Portugal and France have seen only modest progress, with road‑death reductions of 1 % and 6 % since 2015. Experts advise summer motorists to review local traffic rules, plan routes carefully and stay vigilant on unfamiliar roads.
