Serbian authorities launch VJT probe into sound‑cannon case amid accusations of abuse

Former director of the Military Security Agency, Momir Stojanović, said the Serbian regime is using the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office (VJT) to initiate a predisposition proceeding concerning the alleged use of a sound‑cannon at a March 15 protest in Belgrade. He argued that the procedure violates the VBA law, misuses the military police and VBA, and is intended to (1) distance the government from the incident, (2) silence domestic and international criticism, and (3) restore the regime’s public rating.

A commentary in Vreme echoed these concerns, describing a broader campaign in which police and secret services target analysts, journalists and students. It noted that the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office has concluded that students fired the sound‑cannon themselves, despite evidence to the contrary, and highlighted growing numbers of requests to police for information that are often ignored.
