Serbian border arrests target Kosovo citizens

Serbian authorities have been detaining Kosovo citizens at several border crossing points. Security officials say the arrests stem from long‑standing databases maintained by Serbian intelligence that flag individuals with alleged links to the former KLA.

Security analyst Drizan Shala explained, “This database is targeted by Serbian security and intelligence for those who have ties to the KLA and not only. Therefore Kosovo citizens should avoid this territory because these actions may continue.” Human‑rights lawyers argue the practice breaches international standards. Lawyer Ardian Bajraktari noted that Serbian law obliges authorities to inform families and provide legal counsel, saying, “The rules and laws in Serbia foresee the obligation to contact the family of the arrested person and to enable an attorney. In practice, this is left to discretion.” When arrests are found to be unfounded, affected individuals can seek compensation for pre‑trial detention.
