Serbian Government Accused of Incompetence and Power Abdication
The academic initiative ‘Rebellious University’ issued a statement titled “Why the Serbian Government Should Have Resigned Long Ago,” evaluating the government's first 15 months in office. It alleges serious incompetence in public‑policy management and a abandonment of constitutional duties, allowing key decisions to be taken outside the institutions prescribed by the constitution.
The group points to systematic erosion of university autonomy through financial pressures, dismissals, police raids on campuses, and illegal interference in elections of deans and student‑parliament members. It condemns the continued enforcement of the unconstitutional Regulation 5/35, which it says damages Serbia’s international scientific standing, and notes low public trust in the judiciary—only 30 % of citizens and 36 % of enterprises consider it independent, according to Eurobarometer data.
