Bijelo Polje hate graffiti triggers Montenegrin prosecutor probe

New hateful graffiti bearing the messages “Nož, žica, Srebrenica” and “Ubij Turke” appeared overnight on a concrete wall in the Medanovići neighbourhood of Bijelo Polje, Montenegro. The inscriptions were discovered by local journalists, quickly painted over, and prompted a response from the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutor Ljubica Caković Jelić said the duty officer was informed and ordered the police to collect information and determine the circumstances of the incident. The graffiti follow a prior incident in the same town where a slogan “Srbe na vrbe” was painted just days earlier, leading the prosecutor’s office to open a separate case. Civic groups and NGOs condemned the new messages as incitement to violence and called for swift identification and prosecution of those responsible. Authorities continue to investigate the authorship and potential criminal liability under hate‑speech legislation.
