Serbian MP Đukanović's Defamation Suit vs. Journalist Cvijić Awaiting Verdict

The Higher Court in Belgrade held the final hearing in the defamation case brought by Serbian Progressive Party MP Vladimir Đukanović against NIN journalist Vuk Cvijić. Đukanović alleges that Cvijić damaged his reputation by reporting on the Jovanjica affair and claims that he, together with party official Papić, offered €100,000 to police inspector Slobodan Milenković to have the case quietly resolved.

Cvijić’s defence argued that his statements were made within the bounds of freedom of expression and the public’s right to information. The court rejected the defence’s request to call Inspector Milenković as a witness, deeming it unnecessary. Both sides presented their final arguments, with Đukanović’s lawyer seeking enforcement of the claim and Cvijić’s counsel requesting dismissal, emphasizing the journalist’s professional conduct. A verdict is expected in the coming days.
