Serbian media groups condemn new threats to TV N1 and journalist Veran Matić

Veran Matić, president of the Independent Electronic Media Association (ANM) and editor of TV N1, received a series of brutal death threats shortly after being physically attacked in front of the Serbian parliament. The same threatening messages were sent to TV N1’s newsroom, and journalist Danica Vučenić also received a threatening letter addressed to her family from Maribor, Slovenia. Serbian journalist organisations – the Independent Journalists’ Association (NUNS) and the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) – denounced the threats, calling the pattern of digital harassment a result of long‑standing impunity and urging the Ministry of the Interior and the prosecutor’s office to locate the perpetrators and launch investigations. They also criticized the lack of cooperation with Slovenian police and the post office. The statements highlighted that Serbia records hundreds of attacks and threats against journalists each year, placing the country among the highest‑risk nations for media freedom in Europe.
