Serbian monasteries preserve historical and cultural traditions

Serbian monastic history and traditions are highlighted through the legacies of the Grnčarica and Mileševa monasteries.

Grnčarica Monastery, located near Kragujevac, has a complex history spanning several centuries. While some traditions attribute its founding to King Dragutin in the 13th or 14th century, written records suggest it was built between 1521 and 1567 following the restoration of the Peć Patriarchate. The site has faced significant destruction during various conflicts, including the Austro-Turkish wars and both World Wars, which resulted in the burning of archives and the loss of religious artifacts. Major restoration efforts occurred in 1869.

At Mileševa Monastery near Prijepolje, a unique connection to medieval traditions is maintained by Nun Irina. As the monastery's falconer, she cares for a hawk, a practice that echoes the falconry traditions once cherished by the Nemanjić dynasty. This practice began as a practical measure to manage pigeon populations and has evolved into a preservation of a skill recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
