Serbian municipalities adopt new decade-long waste management plans

Municipalities in Serbia are developing long-term strategic waste management plans to modernize their environmental infrastructure over the next decade.

The municipality of Ruma has adopted a Local Waste Management Plan for the period from 2026 to 2036. The strategy aims to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of recyclable waste sent to landfills. Key initiatives include expanding primary waste selection in households, promoting home composting, and reducing illegal landfills. Planned investments include the construction of a household waste collection center, the procurement of new waste containers, and the acquisition of new machinery and transport vehicles for JP ‘Komunalac’.

In Vršac, the city has initiated the creation of a new ten-year waste management plan in collaboration with the professional organization ‘Aurora Green’ doo. The process involves analyzing current conditions to improve waste collection, selection, reuse, and treatment. The plan will focus on developing infrastructure and services while reducing landfill reliance. Local officials emphasized that the development process will include public consultations to allow citizens to participate in shaping the future system.
