Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announces new airport rail link and large pension aid package

President Aleksandar Vučić told a TV interview that construction of the 18.3‑km railway connecting Belgrade’s centre with Nikola Tesla Airport is progressing at an "exceptional speed" and will allow travel between the airport and the city in 15‑20 minutes. The line includes four bridges, a viaduct and an overpass, with the first 4.5 km already laid and electric power installed, and is scheduled for completion and testing by the end of the year.

Vučić also announced that a substantial set of measures for pensioners will be presented on 27‑28 June in Belgrade. He said the package will contain significantly higher cash benefits and reductions in the price of essential medicines, aiming to improve the living standards of seniors over the medium term.

In the same remarks, Vučić defended Serbia’s defence spending, saying the country’s military investment protects its airspace and territory and deters any potential attack.

Opposition figures, including SSP leader Dragan Đilas, questioned the government’s handling of EU‑related discussions and urged broader European‑aligned cooperation ahead of upcoming elections.
