Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates third translation of Saint John the Baptist’s head

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its faithful marked the third *obretenje* (translation) of the relic‑head of Saint John the Baptist on 25 May (Julian calendar) / 7 June (Gregorian calendar). The observance recalls the relic’s historic moves: from a secret burial site to Komane in Cappadocia during the 8th‑century iconoclast period, and later to Constantinople in 850 under Emperor Michael and Patriarch Ignatius.

Traditional beliefs surrounding the day hold that the sky opens three times at midnight, allowing the dead to enter heaven; those who stay awake may make three wishes that will be fulfilled. Customs forbid heavy labour and the use of sharp objects, while encouraging the gathering of medicinal herbs such as yarrow, mint and horse‑chestnut. The holiday is accompanied by prayers, candle lighting and modest donations to the church.
