Serbian Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Philip the Deacon
The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers are observing the feast day of Saint Philip the Deacon on October 24. According to church tradition, Philip was one of the seven original deacons chosen to assist the early Christian community, particularly in caring for the poor, widows, and those in need.
Originally from Caesarea in Palestine, Philip is remembered as a dedicated preacher of the Gospel. His ministry included spreading Christian teachings in Samaria and Ethiopia, notably through his encounter with an Ethiopian court official. Tradition also links his missionary work to regions in Asia and Greece.
Accounts of his martyrdom vary, but most traditions place his death in Hierapolis, Phrygia. He is described as having been crucified—sometimes reported as being crucified upside down—while praying for those who persecuted him. He is often associated in his ministry with the Apostle Bartholomew and his sister Maryamna.
