Orthodox Christians celebrate the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God
Orthodox Christians are celebrating the feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God (Pokrov), a significant religious holiday dedicated to her intercession and protection of the faithful.
The holiday commemorates a 10th-century vision at the Blachernae Church in Constantinople. According to tradition, during an all-night vigil in 911, Saint Andrew the Fool-for-Christ and his disciple Epiphanius witnessed the Virgin Mary appearing above the congregation. She was seen spreading her omophor (veil) over the people as a sign of divine protection against enemies.
In many regions, the day is observed with special customs. It is often regarded as a significant holiday for women, who pray for the health of their families, protection of children, and peace in their homes. Families celebrating the day as a patron saint feast (slava) prepare traditional fasting tables, candles, and ritual foods. The observance serves as a reminder of spiritual refuge and the power of collective prayer.
