Serbia's Parliament Holds Extraordinary Session on Judicial Law Reforms

President of the National Assembly Ana Brnabić convened an extraordinary session of Serbia's National Assembly, placing a 32‑item agenda on the table. The centerpiece is a package of amendments to the country's judicial statutes – including changes to the law on the public prosecutor’s office, the law on judges, the High Prosecutorial Council, the organization of courts and the body fighting high‑tech crime.

The amendments, first adopted in January, attracted criticism from Brussels. In February Brnabić requested an urgent opinion from the Venice Commission, which issued a preliminary assessment on 24 April. Revised drafts complying with the Commission’s recommendations were submitted in May. After attending the Commission’s meeting on 12 June, Brnabić reported that the body gave an “absolutely positive” opinion on the changes.

Other bills scheduled for the session cover topics such as legislation on human cells and organ transplantation, as well as several guarantee laws aimed at supporting state‑owned enterprises like Srbijagas and the railway passenger transport company Srbija Voz.
