Serbian Parliament President Brnabić faces criticism over claimed Venice Commission approval of judicial reforms

Opposition leaders in Serbia have denounced Parliament President Ana Brnabić’s claim that the Venice Commission gave an “absolutely positive opinion” on recent amendments to the disputed “Mrdić‑Vučić” set of judicial laws. Marinika Tepić of the Freedom and Justice Party questioned the assertion, asking “Za šta tačno ste dobili to navodno ‘apsolutno pozitivno mišljenje Venecijanske komisije’?” and called the legislation “corrections of corrections,” urging Brnabić to resign. Stefan Janjić, general secretary of the opposition party SRCE, described Brnabić’s statements as a “transparent attempt by the regime to present a total international defeat as a victory,” noting that the Venice Commission’s opinion was merely provisional and that the original laws were imposed without public debate to control the prosecution and courts. Both politicians warned that the amendments will not change the regime’s hold over key anti‑corruption institutions and highlighted the European Union’s suspension of growth‑plan funds in response to the reforms.
