Serbian Police Alert Public to New Facebook Phishing Scam on Messenger

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Serbia posted a warning on Instagram that a phishing scheme is being spread through the Messenger app. Users receive messages apparently from Meta AI, Facebook support or other Meta services, claiming their Facebook account will be shut down or limited unless they urgently perform a “verification”.

The messages typically contain a PDF attachment, such as “START_CHECK”, which redirects to a fake website designed to steal passwords, login codes, and payment‑card details. MUP advises citizens not to open the PDF, not to click any links, and never to provide credentials. It reminds that Facebook never verifies accounts via unsolicited Messenger messages. Victims are urged to change passwords, review active sessions, enable two‑factor authentication and contact their bank if card data were entered. Reports can be filed through the “Cyber Guard” platform at sajberstraza.gov.rs. The ministry added, “If you have already opened the attachment or entered data, change your password immediately, check active sessions, activate two‑factor authentication, and contact your bank.”
