Serbian Police Chief Veselin Milić Detained as Murder Probe Expands

Belgrade's Higher Public Prosecutor has asked a court to extend the pre‑trial detention of former police chief Veselin Milić for an additional 30 days, citing risks that he could destroy, conceal or falsify evidence in the investigation of the May 2026 murder of Aleksandar Nešović at restaurant “27”. The same request applies to six other suspects, including the alleged shooter Saša V., his alleged accomplice Maria S., and individuals linked to the crime scene.

Earlier this week, four members of the police Intervent Unit 92 were arrested for a shooting at the “Steak and Wine Bar” in Autokomanda, a case that prosecutors say mirrors the earlier incident in Senjak and raises new questions about possible obstruction of justice by senior police officials. A prior criminal complaint against Milić concerning the Senjak murder was dismissed, prompting public controversy over the handling of the investigations.

The prosecutor argues the extensions are necessary to ensure a fair trial and to protect the integrity of the evidence, while critics accuse the police leadership of attempting to shield its own from accountability.
