Serbian police investigate organized disinformation group
Serbian police are investigating an organized group suspected of using social media to discredit public figures, state institutions, and major companies. The group allegedly aims to destabilize the national economic system and create public unrest through coordinated disinformation campaigns.
One specific incident involved the misuse of a public list of major Serbian companies from the Business Registers Agency (APR). The group reportedly shared this list on social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Viber, falsely claiming the companies were depositors of ALTA Bank following the National Bank of Serbia's decision to revoke the bank's operating license. This was allegedly intended to create panic regarding the stability of the financial system.
Investigators are monitoring the group's use of newly created social media accounts designed to trigger sensitive topics and mass commentary. The group has also reportedly attempted to infiltrate student groups by using fake identities. Police have requested support from Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, and arrests may occur in the coming week.
