Serbian Power Utility EPS Readies Vlasina Hydroelectric Revitalization

Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) announced that preparatory work for the revitalisation of the Vlasina hydroelectric plants is proceeding on schedule, allowing field works to begin in autumn, starting with the entrance construction. General Director Dušan Živković said the project will reconstruct and modernise all generators, auxiliary systems and hydro‑mechanical equipment, improving the reliability and stability of Serbia’s power system for at least the next 30 years.

The total investment is €109.7 million, financed through a €67 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a €15.43 million grant from the European Union’s Western Balkans Investment Framework, and €27.26 million contributed by EPS. The Vlasina plants, operating for over seven decades, are a key source of peak power. Current upgrades follow earlier revitalisations of the Bajina Bašta reversible plant and the Đerdap 1 and Zvornik stations, which together added 172 MW to EPS’s hydro capacity. Representatives of the EBRD and the EU delegation attended the briefing in Surdulica.
