Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to Resign Within Weeks, Calls Early Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that he will step down from the presidency within the next few weeks, triggering the scheduling of early presidential and parliamentary elections, likely to be held in the autumn. The announcement came after more than a year of mass anti‑government protests sparked by the November 2024 collapse of a roof at a railway station in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and ignited accusations of corruption and mismanagement.

Speaking to thousands of supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Belgrade, Vucic said, “These are my last days and weeks as president of the Republic. Then I will resign.” He added that he will head a new coalition called “United Serbia” in the upcoming parliamentary vote and will continue to back the SNS. He did not give a precise date for his resignation or for the dissolution of parliament, which is required to call the early elections.

The protests, largely led by students, continue across the country, demanding early elections and calling for reforms to the rule of law as Serbia pursues European Union accession. Analysts note that Vucic’s resignation may be a strategy to remain in power by returning to the prime‑ministerial post after the elections.
