Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić Announces Resignation Ahead of Early Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he will step down from the presidency within the next few weeks, stating, "Es būšu prezidents tikai vēl dažas nedēļas, tad atkāpšos no amata" (I will be president only a few more weeks, then I will resign). His term ends in May 2025 and the constitution bars him from seeking a third term. Vučić hinted he will support the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in forthcoming early parliamentary elections, and observers expect he may become the party’s leader.

The announcement comes amid heightened political pressure following large-scale protests that began after the November 2024 Novi Sad railway station tragedy, which killed 16 people. Demonstrations, largely driven by students, have demanded early elections and accused the government of corruption and judicial control. An independent monitor counted about 180,000 participants in a Belgrade rally, while a supporters’ meeting also drew sizable crowds organized by SNS and affiliated businesses.
