Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić Announces Resignation and Calls Early Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he will step down within weeks and will trigger early elections. He told a rally his term as president will end soon, after which he plans to resign. Observers argue the move is not a relinquishment of power but a strategy to stay influential, possibly by returning to the prime‑ministerial post after the vote.

Vučić’s announcement follows months of large‑scale protests sparked by the collapse of a train‑station roof in Novi Sad that killed 16 people, with demonstrators blaming government corruption and mismanagement. Opposition groups, students and civil‑society organisations are demanding free elections, independent media and an end to political interference. International bodies have repeatedly criticized Serbia for democratic backsliding. The president dismissed these accusations and said he will support his party’s campaign in the upcoming polls.
