Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić Confronts Der Spiegel Legal Ban and Kosovo Territorial Hopes

German weekly Der Spiegel restored online an article that alleged Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić participated in a “human hunting” unit during the Bosnian war. The piece had been temporarily removed after a Hamburg court ordered a ban, judging the reporting insufficiently verified and contrary to the presumption of innocence, though it recognized high public interest in Vučić’s actions.

U.S. Balkan expert Daniel Serwer warned that Serbia under Vučić is waiting for a geopolitical opening to claim at least the “virgin” part of Kosovo. He linked Kosovo’s NATO aspirations and Albania’s potential role to the situation, and cautioned that any Serbian attempt to seize the whole of Kosovo could spark a destructive guerrilla conflict.
