Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic Announces Resignation and Calls Early Elections
President Aleksandar Vucic told the Serbian Progressive Party that he will submit his resignation in the coming weeks and that both presidential and parliamentary elections will be held early. He said he will remain in office for a short period before stepping down and will continue to play an active role in politics.
Thousands of people have taken to the streets in cities such as Kraljevo, protesting against Vucic’s government and demanding genuine change. Demonstrators cite the November 2024 train‑station collapse that killed 16 people as a catalyst for anti‑corruption rallies. While some supporters welcome the resignation, many critics doubt that Vucic will relinquish power, suggesting the move is designed to allow him to run for prime minister. Vucic also reaffirmed Serbia’s friendship with Russia while pledging to meet its EU commitments.
