Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to Resign After Calling Parliamentary Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that he will step down from the presidency a few days after parliamentary elections are officially called. In interviews with state television and Pink TV, he said the resignation will allow him to run as an ordinary citizen if his political allies nominate him as prime‑ministerial candidate, and to demonstrate that he can compete on the same terms as any other contender.

Vučić also confirmed that he has begun clearing personal belongings, such as books and paintings, from the presidential office. He cited personal responsibility toward his family and ongoing threats and accusations against relatives as part of his motivation. The announcement comes amid heightened pressure after the collapse of a shelter in Novi Sad that killed 16 people and after eight EU member states, including Bulgaria, blocked progress on Serbia’s EU accession talks over concerns about the rule of law, corruption and media freedom.
