Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić Plans Resignation and Early Parliamentary Election

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that he intends to submit his resignation within the next three to four months, possibly even sooner. He said he is already packing his books from the presidential residence and is considering donating the 1,200 volumes he received during his term.

Vučić added that a June 27 event in Belgrade will reveal the Serbian Progressive Party’s list for forthcoming snap parliamentary elections, which he expects to be held within a few months but not in July or August. The elections are likely to be scheduled for the autumn. He also mentioned he is contemplating a candidacy for prime minister and discussed potential new candidates for the presidency.

The announcement comes amid ongoing student protests that have called for early elections since May 2025, following a 2024 building collapse that killed 16 people and raised accusations of corruption and negligence against the authorities.
