Serbian President Vučić’s Kosovo Claim Sparks Judicial and Security Tensions
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić reiterated that Kosovo is part of Serbia, citing both the Serbian constitution and a “law of God.” His statements, made during a ceremony for new army officers, have been condemned by European Democratic parties and have provoked a strong response from Kosovo officials.
Kosovo’s chief negotiator Agron Bajrami said credible dialogue is impossible while Serbia maintains territorial claims. The EU envoy Peter Sorensen met Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti to discuss the reintegration of roughly 130 Serbian judges and prosecutors who resigned from Kosovo institutions in November 2022. The European Union has urged Kosovo parties not to pressure the Judicial Council on the reinstatement of these officials.
The 2023 Banjska incident, a clash in northern Kosovo linked to Serbian actors, remains under investigation. Milan Radoičić is alleged to have acted with Belgrade’s knowledge, and KFOR commander Ozkan Ulutash called on Serbia to cooperate in ensuring accountability for the 2023 attacks.
