Aleksandar Vučić's resignation plan spurs opposition rally and Kosovo accusations

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced he will resign from the presidency, a move German outlets described as a strategic step to keep his party’s grip on power and raised questions about who will succeed him and when elections will be called.

Opposition leader Miroslav Aleksić urged the opposition and student movement to form a united front, condemning Vučić’s alleged authoritarian rule, control of media and ties to criminal networks, and called for dialogue on a joint electoral strategy.

Kosovo’s government accused Vučić of encouraging attacks on Kosovo police by stating that Milan Radoičić, wanted by Interpol for the 2023 Banjska attack that killed a Kosovo police officer, is not a criminal. Kosovo demanded his extradition and warned that Serbia’s statements undermine regional security.

Domestic critics also highlighted the failure of Serbia’s Media Regulatory Council (REM), arguing that its non‑functioning status and partisan appointments reflect the broader erosion of democratic institutions under Vučić’s rule.
