Serbian President Vučić hints at possible resignation amid massive anti‑government protests

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told journalists in Beijing that he "may resign soon," though he gave no timetable and said he would not deliberately shorten his term. The comment came as Serbia grapples with large‑scale demonstrations that have mobilised tens of thousands in Belgrade, demanding early elections.

The protests intensified after a November 2024 roof collapse at a Novi Sad railway station killed 16 people, sparking public anger over alleged corruption and infrastructure neglect. Authorities have reported clashes with police, arrests and injuries on both sides, while the ruling Progressive Party announced a counter‑rally for late June.

Vučić rejected comparisons to former President Boris Tadić’s 2012 resignation and emphasized that any decision would be taken on his own terms.
