Serbian students mock Vučić after he slams alleged candidate list

President Aleksandar Vučić described people that a projected student election list would contain as “parasites on state drains” and called them “absolutely incompetent”. In response, students across Serbia posted ironic messages such as “Ali, predsjedniče… niste na listi” on social media, demanding early parliamentary elections and denouncing corruption.

The backlash follows months‑long anti‑government protests sparked by the December 2024 roof‑collapse tragedy that killed 16 people. A leaked draft list allegedly includes university rector Vladan Đokić and former athletes, though he has not confirmed any candidacy. Meanwhile, the activist group STAV reported that Interpol rejected Serbia’s request for international arrest warrants against six of its members, classifying the cases as political rather than criminal.

Students continue to call for dialogue with authorities, urging the Ministry of the Interior and local officials to address their demands for transparent election rules and protection of civil rights.
