Serbian President Vučić Signals Possible Resignation During Beijing Visit, Cites Student Protest Figures

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told reporters in Beijing that his six‑year term is nearing its end and that he may soon submit his resignation. He said shortening a mandate is a “meaningless formulation,” adding that a president either resigns or serves the full term.

Vučić also addressed the student protest that took place the night before on Belgrade’s Students’ Square, describing the gathering as “empty‑headed, not particularly numerous.” He cited figures from three agencies, which estimated attendance between 30,500 and 34,300 people, and said the government accepted the highest estimate, noting that “precise data show a little under 34,000 were present.” The president said the size of the protest matters less than the messages his party will convey at upcoming rallies scheduled for 26‑28 June.

During the visit he is slated to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the start of a multi‑day official trip to China.
